Why too much choice is not a good thing

I grew up on a small island (total population was about 1,000,000). It took 2 hours of driving to tour the whole island. Now I live in a country where two hours of driving just gets me across town.

Life was pretty simple and choices were few. Each holiday came with its own traditions. Christmas was when the apples, pears and certain local dishes appeared.

Until I came to live the big city life, I thought that apples came in one colour, red and one type, Red Delicious. It was amazing to find out that apples existed in more varieties than I could taste or tell apart. I guess the same was true when I told locals in the big city that mangoes came in a wide variety too.

As we get more tech savvy and closer to living the sci-fi dream, I am seeing a nation that seems to be getting more depressed, anxious and shut down. While the neurological side of depression or any mental illness is not to be disputed, I also see a nation that is overwhelmed by choices.
Marketing has gotten to a level of genius, that we are building a nation that are having huge FOMO issues.

A simple decision of where to go for dinner becomes a TripAdvisor search, Yelp reviews, Google suggestions, Star ratings, cross-comparison etc. Sigh! I think I’ll make a grilled-cheese sandwich.
