Why I Chose A Writing Career
The people who have influenced me
It was 2019.
The career that I had for the past 10 years was coming to an end. It was a small family-owned business, and the owner was ready to move on. I was not a young woman, and with an ABI (Acquired Brain Injury), starting over was going to be a stretch.
I stuck with retail jobs as I could only do part-time hours now and needed to keep life fairly simple. It is never a good idea to overdo life with an ABI. The recovery period could set a person back for a while.
I don’t remember how I stumbled across Medium, but an article written by an author I now consider one of my personal mentors appealed deeply to me. (Ayo) Ayodeji Awosika had written about making money writing on Medium.
He did not sugarcoat it. Writing could be profitable, but it takes time, patience, and consistently showing up daily and doing the work. I liked that view. It was blunt, honest, and direct. In a world where it seemed that everyone was selling the fast track to success, Ayodeji’s frank delivery was a cold water bucket of reality.
As an avid reader and lover of ingesting wisdom, I never considered that my love for words could be a career…
