The fairy tales lied.

They told young girls that if they were good, pretty and animals loved them, then the prince was going to ride in, swoop them up and they would live rich and happily, ever after. However, young boys were not let in on the plan since they were busy slaying dragons, finding treasure and figuring out the best route to Neverland.

Throw in the drama of the high school years. The message that love was only for the size 0 cheerleader and the buff football captain while the rest of us were relegated to life on the back burner, destined to only dream of princes.

Who does not love a good story. Seeing the bad guys get what’s coming to them. Watching the protagonist save the day and the classic victory kiss. It has been the root of storytelling as old as time and we probably will never tire of taking that magical ride to the glory-filled end.

The rub happens when life does not match up to the story. Long before we discovered that life existed outside our house, those were the stories that taught us how life was suppose to work. We were set up to believe that the star-crossed lovers are the benchmark for love. This is how boys are wired and will behave in a relationship. This is what girls must look…
