Part One.

Everyone makes excuses. It is just a part of life. The real challenge comes from knowing why we are making those excuses and how do they influence life. Before you know it, you are in the excuse protection programme and they become a lie that is firmly believed as truth.

There are 3 categories of excuses. There are more but these are the ones that I am struggling with. They are the ones that are used for hiding. You know those. They are the get-out-of-doing-something-I-don’t-want-to-do card. From chores to dates, the hiders are used to avoid commitments, conflicts and hurting the feelings of others. While not particularly harmful, they are often used when you just don’t have the energy to deal with stuff today and would rather not have to explain it to anyone. They are also used to talk others into doing something that really only benefits you not them. They can be a bit manipulative and need to be used wisely. Nobody wants to feel used.

The helpful excuses are used to politely respect your personal boundaries. They are the responsible excuses. They are most used when responding to other requests, reviewing and deciding how to move forward with commitments and responsibilities.
