It was about 7 pm. Night had already fallen, and we (mainly me) had gathered around our small TV set, propped high on the bookshelf, to watch Man from Atlantis (1977).

It was the late ‘70s, and at that time, the local TV station broadcasted on 2 channels. Both were the same programming, but one channel served our sister island. So like typical dinner selections, it was either take it or leave it. You only changed the channel if you were trying to get a better signal.

I was pretty much a teleholic back then. TV shows were on a set schedule. From 9 am to 12 noon you got the children's shows. I had Sesame Street memorized by then.

They were off the air from 3:30 pm until 11 pm. I felt like such a grown-up when I got to stay up till 10 pm to watch Starsky and Hutch (1975) or The Professionals (1977). Rebel I was.

Anyway, the island was currently hooked on Man From Atlantis. The series had just started and islanders were glued to their set faithfully every Sunday night. This was also before the concept of reruns. Once a television series ended, a new one took its place. An entire island became invested in finding out…
