“Is this for real?”

I stood glued to the small screen tv, watching the replay of the flaming towers crumbling and crashing down. It looked like a scene from a box office drama. Special effects at their best. My face mirrored the disbelief of those standing around me. The horror in full colour yet unimaginable at the same time.

September 11, 2001, is a moment that will be forever etched into the history of mankind. A bitter reminder of the depravity that humans are capable of committing when driven by a cause. Where purpose ruled, humanity lost, and innocent souls were discarded as meaningless casualties.

After the dust cleared, a total of 2,977 lives ceased to exist, and another 6,000 were injured. The Twin Towers and surrounding areas claimed 2,753 victims. Meanwhile, 184 passengers died valiantly raging against high jackers on a plane headed to the Pentagon, and 40 others perished in Pennsylvania.

So many everyday people. Starting another ordinary day, filled with their own hopes and purpose. Family, friends, colleagues, lovers, and strangers, all dutifully starting their day, oblivious to the tragedy about to play out before them. Victims in a…
