Hindsight is often touted as a good thing. History, as they say, is doomed to repeat itself if lessons are not learned. I am not a slow learner but I was blindsided by these nuggets that I wished I had understood earlier in my life. They would have definitely changed how I made past decisions.

I was a quiet child growing up. I preferred the company of books and television. I had friends and enjoyed a good, somewhat drama free school life but still preferred to spend my time with an active and creative imagination. I did not understand it at the time but I was a people-pleaser and hated conflict or being the source of anyone’s unhappiness.

To the A-type personalities in my family, I was the quiet child and not well understood as I confided in no one and kept it all to myself. This was my survival pattern and I did not get how it was going to impact my future.

Lesson 1: I am unique and that is ok.
There is no other person like me or you in this world. Others may share similar interests, traits or experiences but our interpretations will be unique to us. Fitting in should be a matter of being accepted and welcomed by others as we are and not who they wished we were.
